Kanana is a very small and lovely township which is less vulnerable to most of disasters that occur in other places. It is not easily affected by disasters but what happened in front of my eyes yesterday (13 November 2013) was so touching after the strong winds in the evening took two shacks down and about six of them roofs destroyed. It was really a sleepless night for most people as most people don't have their Emergency Operation Plan which could have been more helpful to them.
It was really devastating to most people living in those informal settlements (shacks). It happened on two consecutive Wednesdays. While people were recovering from the previous week's, another one hit exactly after a week. We could see people on top of their roofs with hammers this morning on our way to school trying to strengthen the roofs. In some cases we could just hear by hammer-nail-roof noises that the winds had an impact on some roofs. We also had a temporary power-shut-down.
ReplyDeleteJust to give you an idea. Check our Facebook page (World Disaster Management Community College) for pictures of houses (shacks) look like when hit by strong winds.
As I went around the township, I found out that not only shacks were affected, even some hard houses were also affected. Their roofs were blown away by the wind. Some people had to use tents to cover the top of their houses.
ReplyDeleteOur local Disaster Management guys are assessing the damage and urging people to strengthen their houses and shacks to mitigate the effects of such winds and heavy rains this summer.
I don't think that any place in this world is safe to live. Disaster can happen anywhere. Earthquakes, tsunami, hurricane etc come and destroy everything on their way. Proper disaster management and contingency plans should be decide before hand only.
