Background for Dikeledi Ramatladi

My name is Dikeledi Ramatladi and I am 19 years, I live in Kanana Township. I am studying emergency management at World Disaster Management Community College (WDMCC).

I started to attend school at Ntataise Primary in 2000 and then I went to high school at Mmokeng Secondary in 2007 and then matriculated in 2011. That was the best, yet stressing moment ever at school because of the pressure and too much to be done. I passed my matric and I had financial problems at home so I couldn’t further my studies. I tried by all means to go to school but things were very difficult then I started to lose hope , I felt like it was the end of my dreams and I gave up because I had nothing to look up to.

I come from the family of three, my mother passed away in 2006 then I was left with my father and my little sister. My father works at a small company that supplies other companies with timber and he earns little salary but we live like other families. We get along very well and go through tough times and good times like other families and one cannot notice that there’s no mother in the house because we are united and know how to handle things on our own. In five years’ time my father will be in pension so I’ll be taking his responsibilities to look after my family.

With this college my future is bright, the course is great because it has many opportunities and after getting my certificates I won’t struggle to get the job. After the course I am going to look for a job then will further my studies later because of the situation at home.

The first time I heard about this course I was at the meeting with high school principals, KRTC, Mrs. Jan, and Mrs.  Kay and other students. I was confused because I never heard of anything like that and Mrs. Kay and Mrs. Jan explained and at least they brought little light. I was very excited about the college because I had no hope of going to school, then there came this opportunity and I was over the moon.

So far I haven’t experienced many challenges because I’ve got good people on my side making things better. But at first it was difficult because of shortage of resources and it was difficult to learn.

First day at school was not impressive at all, the classroom was dirty and the computers were not working, it was total opposite of what I was expecting then they promised that the following day things would be much better but it was almost the same, the computers were still not working. Otherwise we managed to proceed with our school work using the coordinator’s laptop.

So far the work is great lecturers are sending their lessons, we have taken FEMA online tests. We have learned how to create our family emergency operation plan (EOP) and one for the Kanana Secondary School. It’s amazing how things have turned out, every thing that we needed is here now and Mr. Landon our lecturer has come to help us and I’m very grateful for the things he has been doing for us.

Things get a bit difficult when we don’t have the internet access because most of the courses that we do are online and most of the computers do not work during that time and only four computers can.

I am looking forward to learn more in the second semester and I don’t think there will be any difficulties and challenges like there were in first semester because of the improvements that are made. I just wish that more lecturers would come and meet us.
